What should I expect in psychotherapy?
The therapy process: A travel analogy
-
1. Referral phase
You have decided you want to do it. Your healthcare provider writes you a referral to us via third-party plans (i.e. Medicare, DVA, ADF, NDIS). Once you have the referral, you book a session with us. Or, you book a session with us without a referral (no co-payment support) or using Private Health as a co-payment option.
-
2. Assessment phase
You and your psychologist get to know each other. You are working out if you want to travel together This is usually across the first 1-2 sessions and during this time, your psychologist will be asking questions about your goals for therapy. They will also send your questionnaires to complete.
-
3. Formulation and Planning
You and your psychologist develop a shared understanding of the trip. You develop a loose itinerary and work out what to pack. This is usually done in session 2 or 3.
-
4. Treatment phase
You and your psychologist work to achieve your travel goals. as outlined in the itinerary. Typically, this phase starts in session 3 or 4.
-
5. Review phase
A scheduled check-in (sometimes determined by third party referral guidelines), to see how things are going and discuss any changes or updates to the plan that might be needed. This usually involves communication between you, your psychologist and your healthcare provider. Treatment phase then continues to progress your goals. The timing of this phase varies, but is often session 6, session 10, or somewhere in between, as determined by you and your shared care team.
-
6. Maintenance phase
You’ve achieved your goals, but you want to remember the trip to maintain your progress. You and your psychologist discuss ways to preserve your travel memories and organise scheduled check-ins. The timing of this phase also varies, but is often session 10, session 20 or another time as agreed between you and your shared care team.
