FAQs

  • Our independently reviewed data shows our approach is effective (Cohen’s d = 0.93). More importantly, our results found that one out of every two people who attended Headstrong Health with clinically significant distress experienced reliable symptom improvement, and four out of five people saw some sort of distress reduction.

  • We have advanced training in both clinical and organisational psychology, meaning we have the unique ability to understand work and personal contributions to mental health. For more information on the types of psychology support we offer, see the Our Services page.

  • In order to receive Medicare rebates, you need to obtain a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, medical practitioner, psychiatrist or paediatrician. This will enable you to have up to 10 individual and/or 10 group sessions supplemented by Medicare. There are reporting requirements that your psychologist has under a MHTP so it is important to discuss the process with your doctor. Once you have your MHTP, you can then go ahead and book your appointment with Headstrong Health. Your psychologist will explain more about the MHTP process in your first session if you still have questions.

If you do not wish to use Medicare rebates, you do not need to see your doctor prior to making an appointment (although it is always good practice to keep your medical practitioner updated on your mental health). Check with your private health provider for rebate pricing related to psychology if you wish to access this co-payment option.

  • It is a case of one or the other when it comes to subsidy support. However, you can switch to Private Health once you have exhausted your Medicare Insurance for psychology if you wish. Check with your private health provider for eligibility of psychology reimbursement amounts.

  • Absolutely. It’s important you feel safe and comfortable when talking to your psychologist. The only thing we ask is that you let us know in advance, so we can ensure the room is set up for your needs. Please feel free to talk to us about this when you book your session.

  • There are many contributing factors that impact how many sessions someone will need. Some of these include:

    • How responsive symptoms are to psychotherapy

    • How severely the symptoms are impacting

    • What other supports are in place

Using the outcome informed framework that we do allows us to monitor how you are travelling. If you are not making progress, or your symptoms are worsening, we will talk with you about that and how best to support you. We’ve also developed an overview of the psychotherapy process, to help you understand what to expect.

If you are worried about session numbers or the length of treatment, please talk to us about this.

  • The right therapy depends predominantly on the symptoms you are experiencing and the treatment approach you prefer. We have developed a list of things to keep in mind when considering if therapy is right for you.

  • At Headstrong Health, we take our ethical and professional responsibility as psychologists very seriously. Accordingly, we abide by the APS Code of Ethics for our practice standards. You can expect us to inform you about confidentiality and the limits to it, and de-identify any information you give us consent to use for the purposes of consulting colleagues or training. Your psychologist will explain more about the confidentiality process in your first session if you still have questions.

  • Due to the ongoing costs associated with maintaining a clinical practice, and with the training and registration requirements for psychologists, we are unable to bulk-bill. However, at Headstrong we are committed to accessible healthcare, so provide a small number of discounted sessions per year. Talk to us when you make your appointment to see if you are eligible. Alternatively, there are a number of clinics across Brisbane that we support referrals to.
